ATTRACTS TALENT

WE CONCENTRATE ON SELECTED STRATEGIC RESEARCH AREAS. AIT THUS AIMS TO GAIN A LEADING POSITION WITHIN THE INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH COMMUNITY AND IS COMMITTED TO PLAYING A KEY ROLE IN THESE RESEARCH AREAS FOR OUR CUSTOMERS AND PARTNERS.

quires growing numbers of highly qualified employees. In our recruiting activities at na- tional and international level we rely on the magnetism of science, innovation and rese- arch in which talent attracts talent. Each of our research areas is driven by a highly quali- fied and internationally-networked AIT scien- tist. This will be illustrated by three examples.

THREE HIGHLIGHTS TO ILLUSTRATE AIT’S CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH AREAS

Thomas Pock: Teaching computers to see

Thomas Pock, Principal Scientist working in the field of Intelligent Vision Systems at AIT and Professor of Mobile Vision at the Institute for Computer Graphics and Vision (ICG) at the Graz University of Technology, received the renowned ERC Starting Grant from the Euro- pean Research Council. ERC Starting Grants support excellent scientists at an early stage in their careers, helping them achieve scienti- fic independence. The maximum availa- ble funding amounts to 1.5 million euros for a pe- riod of five years.

Pock was awarded the grant for his work on the HOMOVIS (High-level Prior Models for Computer Vision) project. Computer vision aims to mimic human vision which is able to recognise and distinguish between thousands of different objects in just a fraction of a se- cond whilst consuming minimal amounts of energy. To date mathematical models and computers have not succeeded in getting even close to achieving this fantastic level of ‘computing power’.

AIT and the Graz University of Technology are now combining their strengths in internatio- nal computer vision research, and Thomas Pock is working on state-of the-art image processing technologies for special applicati-

op experts at AIT research and explore the key infrastructure topics of the fu- ture. AIT’s growth course therefore re-
