For air and rail passengers travelling with heavy luggage, switching between transport modes is often cumbersome. Transport hubs are spacious and can be confusing with large distances between different terminals or platforms. Researchers at AIT and the Vienna University of Technology, in collaboration with the ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) and a number of commercial enterprises, develo- ped an autonomous transportation vehicle, which will help passengers with heavy
luggage navigate their way through railway stations and airports. The smart luggage trolley determines its own position using dif- ferent sensors and cameras, calculates the quickest route to a certain destination and avoids obstacles on its way. Feedback from potential users has been incorporated into the design to ensure easy operation. The con- cept was successfully tested in computer si- mulations and in Vienna’s main railway stati- on and is planned to be turned into a functio- nal prototype.
